The Udu is a very unique drum originating from Nigeria. This instrument resembles a clay pot or water jug – with an extra hole carved into the side in addition the hole that would be typically be used for pouring liquid. The hole is pressed and depressed in quick succession to create bass tones, and the entire body is played with the fingers to produce tones similar to that of an Indian tabla. The word ‘Udu’ translates to ‘Vessel’.
